Beignets & Charbroiled Oysters {and a Pimm’s Cup Cocktail Recipe}

Oysters on the Half Shell

Oysters.  Fifty cent oysters on the half shell.  That’s how it began one week ago today.  Wait, you could say it actually began with Pimm’s Cup Cocktails at one of New Orleans most famous watering holes, the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone.  That’s where our bartender recommended Lüke, a Chef John Besh restaurant, located just a short walk away in the Central Business District.  We wasted no time and headed that way.  Lucky us…when we walked through the door we were informed that it was ‘Happy Hour.’  Fifty cent oysters on the half shell.  Half-priced house brews and cocktails.

Escargots au Gratin

Followed by Escargots au Gratin, Jumbo Louisiana Shrimp with Roasted Jalapeno Cheese Grits, and French Fries cooked oh so crispy in duck fat.  That’s how it began.  A fabulous eating, drinking, cultural tour of New Orleans with my Shelby.

We both arrived in New Orleans equipped with a list of things we must-do-see-eat during our visit.  While we didn’t get to everything, we each checked several off our lists ~ Café du Monde, Mr. B’s, Dragos Charbroiled Oysters, Port of Call, Harrah’s Casino and Bourbon Street to name a few.

Pimms Cup Cocktail

As I sit here writing this post I think I’ll most remember the things that weren’t on our lists.  Pimm’s Cup Cocktails with fresh cucumber so refreshingly addictive.  Street musicians that take your breath away with their raw talent.  Artists at the French Market who tell the story of their rebirth post Katrina through their works.  And let us not forget Lucky hot dog stands and Pedicabs who came to the rescue on more than one occasion.  And yes, Beignets and Charbroiled Oysters have been forever etched in our taste buds.
